Wu Wei

In one of the Daoism tribes, it was mentioned that many of the 'Eastern' traditions emphasise non-attachment, non-desire, and non-doing... but in the way that we often understand these concepts in the west, they are completely impracticible.

I wonder, what does Wu Wei mean to you?

For me it has started to become clear as the role of insight in my meditation practice get's stronger and stronger. I've begun to find great references in some Daoist literature about how when the mind reaches a certain degree of stillness - intuitive knowing will arise. To me, this is a big part of Wu Wei. I have at many times experienced that I could 'feel' what the next appropriate step was - in healing, in my life, in relationship - and then make that step and watch miracles happen.

I also am learning a great deal as my taiji practice deepens about non-contention - not opposing by force, but rather going with the flow that is already present and acting with it... but is it really 'acting'? it feels so much different than what i used to call volitional action.

For me, non-action means not forcing any situation or idea, but rather allowing the appropriate next steps to naturally fall into my lap (I sometimes call this intuition). The Tao Te Ching taught me that knowing when to act and when not to act is essential for peace of mind and effective living. I practice thus whenever I can, and when I don't, I realize that I need more practice.

I choose not to be the water pump, but the water itself, which is subject to gravity and easily moves aside when encountered by an obstacle.
I choose not to be the fan, but the wind itself, which is subject to temperature and flows freely in any given direction.
