Quoting John Lash from "The Yin of Tai Chi" (highly recommended) I type...
"The creation of the universe was an unassisted birth. Such spontaneous action is, thus, the highest form of action and is refered to in Chinese as 'Wu Wei'. Wu Wei, spontaneous action, is the highest goal of all Oriental disciplines."
Could our generation intend the same with "just do it"?...e

Re: Just wu wei it?
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 6:28 AMUnfortunately our generation never could define what "it" is, and instead of sitting back and letting "it" be, we made "it" suit whatever purpose we deemed "it" should be.

Re: Just wu wei it?
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 7:21 AMAnother, closer translation of spontaneous action is TzuJen - Of itself so, implying that things don't necessarily need a reason to be the way they are, they are themselves because they are themselves. This is very much like wu wei in that there is nothing extraneous, the action simply is, it is not dependant on precursors or ramifications.

Re: Just wu wei it?
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 7:55 AMThat is saying there is no cause and effect. How is that possible ? -

Re: Just wu wei it?
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 8:07 AMJust be your best being and don't concern yourself with the cause and effect, that is the duality of good and bad, love and hate. Forget it and be to your own internal harmony. In my humble confusion, I bow to your being...e

Re: Just wu wei it?
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 8:20 AMIt's not necessarily denying cause & effect, just saying that they're only one side of the story. In one sense the Idea of TzeRen and Wu Wei are the other side of the story... In another, wider sense they are the whole story - i.e. nothing new under the sun, the tao that can be tao-ed is not the tao, etc.
Wu wei... there's a lot going on, but nothing ever really happens.
THIS IS NOT NIHILISM!
:) :) :)

Re: Just wu wei it?
Sun, February 19, 2006 - 8:01 AMI am certain that I only have part of the story..... my understanding of the most common idea of wu wei is as the state of being or existence before movement, division, yin yang.... a primordial state of harmony and balance before existence or movement toward existence.
I am not sure of the charactures but wu with a descending u means someting like an ability towards direct perception of reality or a natural wisdom... I am sure this is partial knowledge on my part as well..... and after all its all words. -

Re: Just wu wei it?
Sun, February 19, 2006 - 8:04 AMP.S. A nice way to get all this stuff as far as a human is able are the various Taoist yogas especialy including the internal martial arts.
These movements can convey to your body and mind what is meant by Wu Wei and Yin Yang among other ideas. Well worth the time and effort.
